Kate Breakey, Australian born 1957 Rose 8 x 8 Archival pigment print printed directly on to plates of glass. Gold leaf is then hand applied by the artist, and custom framing finishes each work. Kate Breakey's artistic process is an act of investigation a passionate attempt to establish an understanding of the natural world a version that incorporates both intellectual and emotional comprehension which are sometimes incompatible, and distill them into a visual language of images where they can be contemplated. Making images of these things is a natural extension of being fascinated, touch, or intrigued by them. Breakey claims that this process of seeing, and recording transforms her. It is how she expresses wonder and love, a form of dedication. It is also a record of her life and desire to connect herself to all other things, the acknowledgement of a search for explanation, for meaning and significances, a primal longing to grasp things which are unknowable. Since 1980 her work has appeared in more than 110 one person exhibitions and in over 60 group exhibitions. A native of South Australia, Kate moved to Austin, Texas in 1988. Kate Breakey is internationally known for her large scale, richly hand colored photographs including her acclaimed series of luminous portraits of birds, flowers and animals in a series called Small Deaths
